I know this might seem frivilous but I am still trying to get organized. Avon had a expanded file folder for 19.99. The difference is it unfolds and can hang on the wall. So now I can print a deal put the coupons in the pocket by store and fold it back up and go shopping. I already had one that came with my binders but this one can be “put up” and unclutter my space. Just telling anyone in case they are searching for alternatives.

I have recently moved to the area from Cleveland, OH. I have been very frustrated with the prices of the Sunday paper here, and the limit of double coupons at some stores, and have slowed down on couponing a lot. Where do you buy your papers? Is $5 for two about the best deal you can get?

Thanks for your help.

Hi, Melissa!

Welcome to the Lone Star State … and to Thrifty Texan!

I share your frustration over double/triple coupon limits. I keep my fingers crossed that things will eventually change.

I usually pick up the Dallas Morning News and the Denton Record Chronicle 2-pack – it’s cheaper to buy that way versus individually. I also have a lady at church who will sometimes bring me her inserts after she has gotten the coupons she wants. Maybe you could advertise on Craigslist to see if you could find someone in your area/neighborhood that takes the paper, but does not use coupons.

Happy Couponing!

Hi, this is to inform you that Walmart in Cedar Hill Texas apparently has a different agenda than Walmart Corporation. They do not honor all store ads, only the stores they have a typed listing of at their register, not even the name brand sales items from other stores! This is the only Walmart I’ve ever had issues with… I have sent them (Walmart Corporate) an email and have not received a response. I am going to call the store manager today.

Reply

47 Tammy April 11, 2013 at 6:24 pm

Hi Chris,

You are one of the dozen or so that I have received emails from this week saying their Walmart is giving them fits about price matching and/or couponing. It makes me wonder if Walmart is in the process of changing their policies and we’ve just not seen them yet.

I know some things are left up to the manager, but Cedar Hill seems to be taking it a little too far. Have you talked to the store manager about it – or just the front-end manager/CSM? If not, maybe that’s an avenue you can pursue. If you have already, hopefully corporate will work it out for you.

Hi:
I moved to Texas from Oregon about a year ago…the Willamette Valley where local produce was fresh. Miss knowing where to shop. Was told about this from a woman shopping at Wal-Mart last week. Really love it. I was wondering if you knew if there was anything like this for California? My daughter lives in Sacramento and has just gone through some difficult things that have them strapped financially. I visited her last week and was surprised at the cost of things. I tried to poke around on the web but got nowhere, except Orange County.

Thank you for all the time and energy you put into this. My church has an outreach using coupons and another that is reaching out to the homeless. Anything that helps get more into the hands of many helps.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Jody Piccolo

I used to coupon but towards the end I was trying to finish planning my wedding and then got married and then life happened. Now I’m not even sure where to begin to start couponing again. Can you help me figure out how to get started and the best way to get coupon inserts.

Reply

54 Tammy July 25, 2013 at 9:33 am

Hi Claudia!

I generally get the inserts from the Dallas Morning News and/or Denton Record Chronicle each week. However, nowadays we have a great selection of printable coupons to choose from too! I’d recommend getting a binder system going (or another method that works for you), start printing or clipping the coupons you know you’ll use, and before long you’ll being making a huge dent in your grocery/household budget!

If you’ve been reading Thrifty Texan very long, you know that I post the weekly matchups each week. You’ll simply need to make your list (or print the post), then gather your coupons and head to the store.

Hope that helps!

How many newspapers do you generally buy to get the inserts? Ionly have a family of three but with daycare I need to save all the money I can. Do you know of anybody in the denton area that might be willing to help me with couponing?

Reply

56 Tammy July 25, 2013 at 9:56 am

I usually just get the combo that you can purchase on Sunday – it’s cheaper than buying individually. Getting two sets of inserts works for me for my family of 4 – but I do print a lot of coupons.

If you’ll contact me at my personal email rthudgins@gmail.com, maybe we can set up a time to meet and talk coupons on a Sunday afternoon!

I am so upset. Wal mart will not give the turkeys at 37 cents nor the 19 cents at el rancho because it is a gimmick to get you in their stores. I have called and talked to manager and that is what he told me. So what is the difference with the other adds? The manager said that it is in the policy. Why even shop at walmart any more.

Reply

59 Tammy November 20, 2013 at 10:17 am

Not sure which Walmart you shop at, but I price matched the turkeys last Friday at the Decatur store, I have a friend who did in Denton. Sounds like your manager is just “that kind”. Unless he wants to say that the store is out of his area, he is supposed to price match the item, since it’s a legitimate price match. Call corporate – I’ll bet you see some results!

Hi, I was wondering with the Kroger Daytona 500 Savings Event, the store policy is “Coupons will be limited to no more than five (5) paper manufacturer coupons for the like products, each coupon value considered one (1) coupon in the same transaction.” How do you use the coupons for this? For example, if you have 5 $1/1 coupons and you have to purchase 6 to get the automatic $3 deduction. Could I only use 5 coupons and pay regular price for the last one? I called and they didn’t know what I was talking about. Thank you and your site is awesome, I refer to it daily! Thank you again.

Reply

61 Tammy February 20, 2014 at 3:49 pm

Hi Melissa!

The employee probably knows nothing about it, since I’ve never seen them enforce that policy. To avoid any confusion, I would do separate transactions. Say you have (6) of the Suave coupons, I’d do something like this so that I could use a coupon on every product (if you’re only wanting the one product, then, yes, you could just pay full price for the 6th one):

Transaction #1:
(4) Suave Shampoo or Conditioner $1.19
(2) Hormel Chili with Beans 98¢
– (4) $1/1 Suave Professionals Shampoo or Conditioner Coupon (1/26 RP) or Printable Coupon
– (1) 55¢/2 Hormel Chili Coupon (1/12 SS)

Transaction #2:
(2) Suave Shampoo or Conditioner $1.19
(4) Betty Crocker Helpers 89¢
– (4) $1/1 Suave Professionals Shampoo or Conditioner Coupon (1/26 RP) or Printable Coupon
– (1) 80¢/4 Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper Printable Coupon

Hope that helps!

Be aware that you will have the most difficulty with the Walmarts in the southern sector of the Dallas area for price matching. They apparently make up their rules by manager/store.

ECBs stands for Extra Care Bucks. They are the “coupons” you receive at the bottom of your receipt when you purchase a specific item, you can then use the ECBs on your next purchase of anything in the store (excludes prescriptions, tobacco, and a few other items).

Walmart in Duncanville Tx on Clark Rd seemingly make up their coupon matching rules as they go along. Last week it was ‘ they do not match Kroger ads anymore that have the verbiage – with card’. Each Week is it something else. I’ve only experienced problems like this in the southern sector of Dallas, it seems they do not want customers or something…
